Between Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg, one goal after another is scored – and once again Leverkusen scores in the final phase. Victor Boniface becomes the match winner.

Last-minute Leverkusen is back! The Werkself celebrated a hard-fought 4:3 victory against VfL Wolfsburg – Leverkusen were 2:3 down at half-time. In the final phase, substitute Victor Boniface shocked the Wolves and secured the win for Leverkusen. Before that, there was a controversial red card against Wolfsburg.

Leverkusen got off to a very bad start, especially Nordi Mukiele. The new signing scored an own goal on his debut in the starting eleven (5th minute) and Mukiele also did not look good when Sebastiaan Bornauw scored his second goal (37th minute). In the meantime, Florian Wirtz (14th minute) and Jonathan Tah (32nd minute) had equalized for the Werkself.

Before the half-time whistle, Wolfsburg took the lead again, with Swede Mattias Svanberg scoring with a long-range shot to make it 3-2.

Turmoil over expulsion

At half-time, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso brought in some new players. Jeremie Frimpong came on for the unlucky Mukiele and Piero Hincapié replaced Jeanuel Belocian. Hincapié’s substitution in particular paid off, with the Ecuadorian scoring the equaliser in the 49th minute to make it 3:3. In injury time, Bonifatius secured the win for Leverkusen (90th+3).

In addition, Yannick Gerhardt, who came on as a substitute in the 71st minute, sent Frimpong off with a straight red card for an alleged infringement (90th minute). Gerhardt had stepped on the Dutchman’s foot – presumably accidentally – after a foul. Frimpong was shown the yellow card for the action.
