Bryce Harper of the Phillies is hit by a pitch on the left elbow and leaves the game

TORONTO – Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper left Wednesday’s game in Toronto after being hit by a pitch in the left elbow.

Harper winced in pain and grabbed his elbow after being hit by a 92 mph fastball from right-hander Bowden Francis in the first inning.

Harper stayed on base and played defense in the first and second innings. Edmundo Sosa pinch hittered for Harper to start the third inning and took over at third base while Kody Clemens moved from third to first base.

Meanwhile, Kyle Schwarber hit his 13th leadoff home run of the season against Francis, tying the major league record set by Alfonso Soriano in 2003.

A day after hitting three home runs, Schwarber hit a home run for the fourth time in seven at-bats and notched his sixth hit in that span when he slammed a 1-0 pitch into the second deck in right. The 416-footer was his 32nd of the season.

With his 44th career leadoff home run, Schwarber tied Brady Anderson for ninth place on baseball’s all-time list. Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson leads with 81, while Toronto’s George Springer tops the list of active players with 60.

Harper has a .282 batting average with 26 home runs and 76 RBI. The 31-year-old, who recently admitted to playing despite persistent wrist and elbow problems, is playing his first full season at first base after moving out of right field due to right elbow surgery.

Harper returned 160 days after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on November 23, 2022.
