Bruins’ Cam Neely gives honest insight into conversations with Jeremy Swayman

BOSTON – Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has always maintained that contract negotiations between the club and its players should not be disclosed. Cam Neely obviously doesn’t share the same beliefs.

When asked Monday at the Bruins’ media day press conference at TD Garden about how contract negotiations are going with camp holdout Jeremy Swayman, Neely was completely blunt.

“I don’t want to get into chaos with his question,” Neely said. “But I know I have 64 million reasons why I would play now.”

The Bruins president did not provide any further details, including the length of the contract. However, an educated estimate would put the term at an AVV of $8 million for six years. Sweeney said he wasn’t surprised by the contract Swayman demanded, but Neely interjected: “I was surprised.”

“As a former player, I’m not a big fan of low-ball and high-ball. Figure it out somewhere in the middle,” Neely said. “…I think Don’s past has shown that he can close the deals. It’s just a little trickier, that’s all.”

“I firmly believe that Jeremy wants to play here. I asked him straight away: ‘Do you want to play here?’ He does it. I believe they will get a deal done. Unfortunately it hasn’t materialized today.

Neely added that he believes Swayman is trying to reshape the goaltending market for players behind him looking for new contracts.

“I do, yes I do,” Neely said. “What his question is and what we think his conflict is are two different things.”
