Car accidents in Michigan

Brownstown Twp., MI – Car crash with injuries on I-75 near Sibley RdBrownstown Twp., MI – Car crash with injuries on I-75 near Sibley RdSerious injuries from car accidents occur every day in Michigan. Many victims are unable to work for weeks as they undergo extensive medical treatment. These injuries often include severe spinal cord fractures, broken bones, and deep cuts and lacerations. Unfortunately, many of these accidents could have been prevented. The most common causes of car accidents in our state include:

  • Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit increases the likelihood of losing control, especially during sudden changes in traffic. It also increases the distance required to stop the vehicle, which can result in collisions that could have been avoided at lower speeds.
  • Distractions while driving: Whether it’s texting, eating, or using a navigation system, distracted driving takes your attention away from the road. This split-second distraction can lead to devastating accidents and leave victims with life-changing injuries.
  • Weather conditions: Michigan’s unpredictable weather can create dangerous driving conditions such as icy roads, heavy rain or fog. Drivers who do not adjust their speed or driving habits for the weather are more likely to cause accidents.
  • Reckless driving: Aggressive driving behavior such as tailgating, swerving and aggressive driving significantly increase the risk of accidents. These behaviors not only affect the driver, but also all other road users.
  • Ignoring red lights or stop signs: Failure to obey traffic signals is a common cause of collisions at intersections. These accidents are often serious because they usually involve one vehicle hitting another at high speed.
  • Drunk driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and reduces coordination. Drunk driving is a leading cause of serious and fatal crashes in Michigan.
