Brooke Shields’ daughter Grier Henchy once wore her wedding dress by Andre Agassi (exclusive)

When it came to choosing a dress for her high school graduation in 2024, Brooke Shields’ daughter, 18-year-old Grier Henchy, just had to look in her mom’s closet.

“Her graduation dress was my first wedding dress,” Shields says of the dress she wore at her 1997 wedding to tennis star Andre Agassi.

“We had to re-bone it a little bit to make it tight and smooth,” adds Grier, 18, who just started her freshman year of college. (She attended Wake Forest University with her older sister, Rowan, 21.)

“We took out all the pouf because I didn’t want it to be baggy,” Shields adds. “And we made it strapless.”

“She looked great in it,” says the 59-year-old star. “It’s such an honor when they want to wear your stuff. They don’t usually think I’m cool.”

In this week’s issue of PEOPLE, Shields and her two daughters Rowan and Grier (their father is Shields’ second husband Chris Henchy) talk about life at home Really This includes, for example, raiding her mother’s unique wardrobe.

Nothing is off limits, says Shields, whose children are now out of the house for the first time. “Honestly, they can wear anything just to give it a second life – you keep things and wonder why,” she says. “It’s like a big Sotheby’s auction? I highly doubt that. Unless they’re iconic items. So if they have a second life, it feels good.”

The dress she wore to her wedding to Agassi (whom she divorced in 1999) is a perfect example. “He’s a good guy, so it was really like a big full-circle moment for me,” she says, “and it honors something and I think that’s healthy.”

This isn’t the first time her daughters have worn one of her famous outfits. In 2021, Rowan chose to wear her mother’s scarlet dress, designed by Richard Tyler, to her high school prom. (Brooke had originally worn it to the 1998 Golden Globes.)

Rowan says, “I was down in New York, looking through a bunch of her old dresses, making a TikTok and trying on this red dress. I didn’t really want to go through the whole process of finding a ball gown. I was more like, ‘If we have something here…’ and I found this red dress.”

“It fit me, except for my breasts, and we had it adjusted a little. It was like it was perfect and I was just doing a Hollywood wave,” she says, laughing.

Shields smiles as she sees how it all worked out. “If it had been my idea, it would never have been so well received. They would have said, ‘That’s weird.’ But she went downstairs, searched the archives and found it herself. It was a very special dress. Richard Tyler had made it for me and I felt so glamorous in it – and the next day I was being told off by my agent.”

“They said, ‘If you wear a red dress, you’ll never be taken seriously as an actress,'” she says. “And I said, ‘I don’t really understand how that relates.’ And the next year, everyone was wearing red at the Golden Globes, and I took the PEOPLE page (with the dress), threw it on their desk, and said, ‘I’m ahead of my time.'”
