Broncos sign ILBs Kwon Alexander and Zach Cunningham to their training squad

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – The Broncos added two veteran linebackers to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Denver signed Kwon Alexander and Zach Cunningham to its practice squad to begin a week of practice at the Greenbrier. Both were present at Wednesday’s practice.

Alexander last played nine games for Pittsburgh in 2023, but his season ended in November when he tore his Achilles tendon for the second time in his career.

Alexander, a Pro Bowler in 2017, spent the first four years of his career in Tampa before playing for San Francisco, New Orleans, the New York Jets and then the Steelers.

He knows Broncos head coach Sean Payton and some of his staff, having played under Payton with the Saints in 2020 and 2021.

Alexander is healthy again after injuring his Achilles tendon last fall and has been training for teams like Atlanta and Minnesota in recent weeks.

Cunningham, 29, has played in 95 games in his career and most recently started 10 games for Philadelphia last year. He played for Tennessee in 2021 and 2022 after spending the first four years of his NFL career as a starter in Houston.

From the infirmary. There were further injuries on Wednesday: JL Skinner (ankle) was unable to practice, while TE Nate Adkins (shoulder) and WR Josh Reynolds (Achilles tendon) were limited.

Beamer ball. Legendary Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer was on hand to watch the Broncos practice on Wednesday, and Payton said they met over a decade ago when New Orleans first came here to practice.

“He remembered his last game before he was hired at Virginia Tech. I think he was the head coach at Murray State,” Payton said. “They made the playoffs in 1986 and lost in the first round to Eastern Illinois. I was the quarterback. The next week we lost to Eastern Kentucky. … I knew Coach Beamer, damn, that was a long time ago. He obviously had a tremendous influence. His son (Shane) coaches at South Carolina. Nate Adkins played for him at South Carolina and Nate’s dad coaches at South Carolina.

“It’s great to see him here.”
