Broncos HC Sean Payton reacts to transfer rumors to Sutton-49ers

Denver Broncos Head coach Sean Payton seemingly confirmed – but at the same time minimized – a current report that the San Francisco 49ers tried to sign experienced wide receiver Courtland Sutton this offseason.

“I will say over the last three months, there have been several calls from teams about Courtland,” Payton told reporters on Monday. about Pro Football Talk. “He’s a good football player. That’s a little far-fetched as far as the specifics. I read the same thing you did, and I would say we haven’t come anywhere close to what may have been reported. That’s insignificant. It would be ridiculous for me to comment on every call that comes to (general manager) George (Paton) or myself.”

ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported Thursday that Denver had discussions about a possible three-way trade, but it never materialized. According to Russini, the 49ers offered Sutton a third-round draft pick and, if they had accepted, would have traded then-unhappy wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Broncos declined, thereby destroying any hope of a potential blockbuster.

It’s unclear exactly when the Broncos discussed this deal, but it was likely before Sutton agreed to a restructured contract worth up to $15.2 million for 2024, including $1.5 million in incentives.

Sutton, entering his seventh NFL season, returns as Denver’s top wide receiver after recording a career-high 10 touchdown catches and a team-high 772 yards on 59 receptions in the 2023 season.
