Briton Jack Draper reaches his first major semifinal at the US Open

NEW YORK – Jack Draper stormed into his first Grand Slam semifinal on Wednesday with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 win over Alex De Minaur, becoming the first man since 2020 to reach the semifinals of the US Open without dropping a set.

The 25th seed Briton relied on his serve, which reached 206 km/h, for some of his 40 winners in the match and managed six breaks against the serve of the 10th seed de Minaur.

Draper is the fourth Briton to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows in the Open Era and the first since Andy Murray won the title in 2012.

In Friday’s semifinals, he will face either top seed Jannik Sinner or number 5 Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev was the last man to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows without dropping a set in the year before he won the title in 2021.

Draper’s win over 10th seed De Minaur is his second consecutive victory over an ATP top 10 player, having defeated No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz at the Queen’s Club in June. Before that, Draper had a record of 2-11 against ATP top 10 players.

The 22-year-old Draper started the year ranked 61st in the world and is expected to break into the top 20 of the ATP rankings for the first time.

The last man to win the US Open title without dropping a set was Neale Fraser in 1960.
