Britney Spears reviews Sabrina Carpenter’s VMA performance

Britney Spears comments on this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

The pop princess, who hosted the awards show in the late ’90s and early 2000s, took some notes on the ceremony after watching some clips on YouTube.

“Did you watch the VMAs?” she asked her 42 million Instagram followers on Thursday. “I didn’t watch the VMAs, but I saw some YouTube footage of Sabrina Carpenter on my phone.”

Afterwards, Spears had some questions about the “Espresso” singer’s performance.

“Why is she kissing an alien on stage?” she asked, before saying that she loves and adores the singer.

“I didn’t understand that part. Why didn’t you kiss a girl?” asked the “Toxic” singer.

On Wednesday night, Carpenter kissed a dancer dressed as a female alien during her live performance of the song “Taste.” The kiss was a reference to her on-screen kiss with actress Jenna Ortega for the song’s music video.

Fans will remember Spears kissing Madonna during her “Like A Virgin” performance with the “Material Girl” and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 VMAs.

It turns out that Carpenter’s entire performance was a subtle nod to the legendary Spears.

The performance began with the singer sitting on a swing, reminding viewers of Spears’ music video for the song “Lucky” while she sang her hit “Please Please Please.” During the transition into “Taste,” the stage transformed into a space theme and played Spears’ interlude from her 2000 hit “Oops… I Did It Again.”

Spears may not have fully understood the tribute to her heyday, but she did notice Carpenter giving her a shout-out on the red carpet.

“I thought it was kind of cool. Sometimes I forget that I’m famous because I’m a mother and I’m pretty old,” she told the camera. “But that was kind of cool. That’s cool. She’s really cool.”

Carpenter wasn’t the only celebrity to pay tribute to Spears on Wednesday night.

The ceremony’s host, rapper Megan Thee Stallion, wore the same “Slave 4 U” outfit that Spears wore during her 2001 performance, complete with a live yellow snake.

Singer Tate McRae paid tribute to the Princess of Pop by wearing a mini dress with sheer lace sleeves reminiscent of Spears’ look from 2001.

Even though Spears didn’t see the entire awards ceremony, her influence was definitely felt in the hall at New York’s UBS Arena.
