Bride’s brother is not allowed to appear in wedding photos because crutches are the wrong color

A teenager put his mobility above the color scheme of his sister’s wedding – and was therefore asked not to forego the wedding photos.

The 15-year-old explained in a Reddit post on the popular “Am I the A——?” subreddit that he would be attending his eldest sister Sophia’s wedding, noting that because he has “mild cerebral palsy,” he had worked out a plan with her to use a black cane at their black-and-white wedding ceremony.

“Sophia had asked me to make my cane more appealing for a wedding… which I completely understand (my normal one is covered in stickers),” he shared in the post. “Of course, I understand it wasn’t exactly formal, so I wrapped it in black tape, which my sister was happy with.”

However, he said that on the day of the wedding he had “a very bad day” where his “legs hurt” and he “completely lost my balance.” He said he ended up having to use his “crutches, which are blue,” for the ceremony, noting that he “thought it was going to be fine.” But when he got to the reception, it was a different story.

“She seemed terribly offended that I was using my blue crutches and asked if I could just sit there and not take the crutches out so as not to ruin the color scheme,” he said. “I was frustrated, but I just did it because it’s my sister and she’s right, they were very noticeable.”

He said that when it came time for the family photos, his sister Sophia complained to their mother that he was “ruining the pictures,” and he told her to “pull herself together.”

“Then she begged our mom to tell me I couldn’t be in the FAMILY PHOTOS,” he said. “I was sure my mom would realize how ridiculous this was, but my mom just took my sister’s side and told me that I was technically ruining the issue.”

He said this led to an “argument” between the three of them, which resulted in his sister starting to cry at the wedding, which she said ruined her wedding makeup. She also complained that “her pictures showed ‘ugly blue crutches.'” Her mother then asked him to leave before the food was served or the cake was cut.

“I couldn’t believe my sister was crying over something so stupid,” the teenager said, adding that he was surprised because his family “had never behaved like that before.”

“My whole family says ‘this is their special day’ and I ruined it by making such a fuss. I don’t understand (at all) how that’s reasonable,” he added, before asking other Reddit users for their opinion.

In the comments, several people echoed the teen’s sentiments, with one saying the boy’s family shouldn’t have made such a big deal about the color of the crutches, especially since “the color could easily be digitally altered,” adding, “the fact that they thought your inclusion was less important than the color scheme speaks volumes about the type of people they are.”

Another said: “This isn’t a wine stain on the bride’s dress or a cousin wearing white. It’s part of the way (the Redditor) carries himself. No one is even going to look at these pictures, let alone look at them and think, ‘If only they were black, this photo would look better.'”

“Weddings are about celebrating love and connection with family and friends,” wrote one commenter. “They should NOT be about aesthetics. Or treating family like accessories instead of loved ones.”

When some users commented on their surprise at the family’s reaction, one user noted, “They’ve never behaved like this before, that’s why I find it so ridiculous.”
