Bride threw friend out of wedding when son ruined cake

While a wedding is an exciting, joyous event in a person’s life, sometimes the celebration can also put a strain on the couple’s friendship. That’s what happened to a woman and her best friend who tied the knot two weeks ago: After the woman’s four-year-old son “ruined” a central part of the festivities, the bride kicked her friend out of the party – and they still aren’t on speaking terms. The woman described the whole situation on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” subreddit on August 19, 2024, with the internet deciding who was at fault.

The original poster explained that before the big day, the bride was torn about whether or not to invite children to her wedding. Although the bride’s sisters had younger children, she wanted to “let go and enjoy” the event “without having to worry about kids messing everything up,” according to the Reddit post. The writer, who has a four-year-old son, said she had children at her own wedding and never regretted that decision. After talking about it with her siblings and a friend, the bride decided to add children to her guest list.

When the bride’s big day came, she kept her son busy with “quiet activities” during the ceremony, according to the Reddit user. After the bride and groom said “I do,” everyone gathered for the reception. While the adults hit the dance floor, the woman’s son and the bride’s nieces walked around the room. When it was time for the bride and groom to cut the cake, the bride’s best friend and her husband stood behind the crowd that had already gathered around the cake table. Then she heard the bride scream her son’s name. “My husband and I go to see what’s going on,” she said. “I see my son with icing around his mouth and on his fingers. A small piece of the cake was torn out.”

When the Reddit user saw the scene, she tried to apologize to the bride for her son’s behavior, but the bride screamed, “This is YOUR FAULT. Your son RUINED my cake. He’s only here because YOU told me it was worth getting the kids involved!” According to her Reddit post, the guest yelled at the bride, explaining that it was a complete accident and the rest of the cake was still intact. However, the bride was still not ready to forgive her so-called best friend. “She told me in front of everyone that I was not her friend and he was not her nephew,” the OP revealed. “She told me to leave or she would call security. My son and I cried and we (three) left.”

After the wedding, one of the bride’s sisters reached out to the author to apologize for her sister’s behavior and advised her to apologize – which the Reddit user refused to do. “I expect an apology first before I say anything to her,” the Reddit user shared. “Not only did she freak out at me in front of everyone, but she also freaked out at my son. I feel humiliated, but I’m even more angry because of him.”

Among the 7,000 comments, the internet largely concluded that the woman who wrote to Reddit was in the wrong. Most people blamed the woman for her son’s behavior because she was responsible for him. “There is no way you actually believe you aren’t the asshole,” one person commented. “You just let your four-year-old run around unsupervised and uncontrolled. When your friend got upset at you for your son taking a bite of the cake, you dismissed it as an accident. It wasn’t an accident, your son took a bite of the cake because of your carelessness.”

Others said the surgery was to blame for pushing the bride to invite her son to the wedding. “You keep trivialising it – just a small chunk was taken out of it is still edible!” remarked another. “That’s obviously not the point. The point is that she didn’t want children to ruin her wedding and you basically created a situation that allowed that to happen through your negligence. You are completely wrong.”
