Brewers overcome eight-run deficit in comeback of the year

play

Relentless.

Undaunted.

Incredible.

The Milwaukee Brewers staged a comeback for the ages on Sunday afternoon, overcoming an 8-0 deficit and surprising the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 10-9 victory at American Family Field.

After Arizona pitched a seven-run inning against right-hander Frankie Montas, the Brewers faced an uphill battle, but a solo hit in the bottom half of the third inning, two more in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh inning brought them within shouting distance.

In the eighth they screamed.

Loud.

RESULT: Brewers 10, Diamondbacks 9

Milwaukee scored four runs to turn a 9-6 deficit into a lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rhys Hoskins tied the game with a two-run single and Jake Bauers put them ahead with an infield hit to Devin Williams in the ninth inning.

It was the fourth comeback of eight or more runs in franchise history.

Hopefully you didn’t turn off your TV.

If so, you missed one of the most remarkable comebacks in baseball this year.

The Brewers overcame an 8-0 deficit and took a 10-9 lead at the end of the eighth inning.

Milwaukee entered the eighth inning trailing by three and with two outs and no one on base against reliever Joe Mantiply. Jackson Chourio worked a walk and Blake Perkins reached base on a single, passing the baton to Garrett Mitchell, who hit an RBI in a lefty-versus-lefty duel.

That led to flame-throwing reliever Justin Martinez’s turn to face Rhys Hoskins. After falling behind 2-0, Hoskins battled back to get the full count and eventually hit a single to right that tied the game.

The Brewers weren’t finished yet.

Willy Adames hit a double into the wall in left to bring the lead run to third base. Jake Bauers came in to replace Gary Sanchez and delivered a perfectly placed hit to the infield grass. Arizona had no chance of throwing him out.

Frankie Montas’ start put the Brewers in an 8-0 hole

Milwaukee trailed early after a home run that left the field and another in Little League fashion, trailing 2-0 in the third inning.

Ketel Marte singled Frankie Montas to deep right with one out in the first inning to give Arizona a 1-0 lead, and the score remained until the third inning, when Geraldo Perdomo hit a triple to right and scored when Brice Turang’s errant relay throw skittered past Joey Ortiz at third base and into the camera field.

Perdomo would have scored anyway, as the Brewers’ problems only worsened later in the inning. Pavin Smith followed Perdomo’s at-bat with a single and later scored when Marte got a walk, Joc Pederson got on base on catcher interference, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a one-run grounder that should have been a double play that made it 3-0.

But that was not the end of the misery. Jake McCarthy hit a two-run single through the right side of the infield and Josh Bell followed with a two-run homer to center, extending the lead to 7-0.

Eugenio Suarez followed with a solo throw to make it 8-0. Montas even managed to escape the nightmare on his own and had to be replaced after reacting to the Suarez throw with a walk that increased his pitch count in the inning to 41 pitches.

Brewers grab a few spots in third and fourth place

Milwaukee finally broke a long-running slump with three runs in the third and fourth innings. Perkins hit an RBI single to put the Brewers on the scoreboard in the third inning, then a Sal Frelick double and a sacrifice fly by Ortiz gave Arizona an 8-3 lead in the third inning.

This goal ended a streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings by the Milwaukee offense.

Draw in the seventh

Milwaukee’s offense came to life early in the seventh inning, turning an eight-run lead into a nail-biter for the visitors when Hoskins and Adames each hit an RBI double to pull within 8-6.

But Adames was thrown out at home on a grounder after stealing third base for the first out of the inning, and Frelick followed with a 4-6-3 double play as reliever Ryan Thompson fended off the threat.

However, Jared Koenig got a run back in the eighth inning and the D-backs again led by three points.
