By now, Chiefs fans probably know all about Patrick Mahomes’ annual pass-catching camp, which takes place every spring in Texas.

But Chiefs general manager Brett Veach recently talked about the work Mahomes is doing off the field with the receivers during training camp in St. Joseph.

On the GM Shuffle podcast, Veach talked about how Mahomes takes the time to analyze training videos with the Chiefs’ receivers.

“We used to have two practices a day, and after the CBA made the changes, we had our practice in the morning, then we had the afternoon break and then special teams,” Veach said. “Pretty much all the players like Pat and (tight end Travis) Kelce watch their video after the morning, then they get treatment and that’s their day until the meetings later in the evening.

“Pat, I guess since two years ago, practice is over, meetings are over, and then he comes to the special teams practice period, brings the receivers in and goes through the tape.”

Mahomes will discuss practices with the guys he throws the ball to, another step to help them get on the same page.

Veach explained why Mahomes’ film sessions are important.

“You have the coaching element where the coaches analyze the practice tape and go over the film. Pat will do that again on his own with the receivers,” Veach said. “So you’ll get Coach (Andy) Reid’s perspective, you’ll get the OC’s perspective, but then you’ll also get Pat’s perspective of the two during the special teams portion of our practice. He’s one of those guys, he’s always looking for a competitive edge no matter how he can get it.

“And he’s the first one in and the last one out, and he looks for little things to always challenge himself and get one percent better, and that’s what makes him so special.”
