Earlier this week, the preseason poll of college football coaches was released and Virginia Tech was significantly overlooked, failing to make the top 25. The Hokies were the third team to receive votes, coming in at No. 28, which seems low.
Around the same time, Action Network’s Brett McMurphy released his top 25 poll and ranked the Hokies in the top 25. He is one of many reporters who rate Virginia Tech and Brent Pry highly for 2024. Let’s take a look at his top 25.
OK, so some thoughts on McMurphy’s top 25. He has Miami as the only ACC team in his top 10, and he has Clemson and Florida State in his top 15, with Virginia Tech being the next ACC team at #24.
As for the Hokies, McMurphy is very excited about them because Virginia Tech was able to hold onto them, and he’s very excited about quarterback Kyron Drones, and rightfully so. He also pointed to Virginia Tech’s ACC schedule, which includes six teams projected to finish in the bottom half and no Florida State. He also neglected to mention that Louisville and North Carolina State are also not on the schedule, which the Hokies also beat last season, and two teams McMurphy had in his next 15 teams from the poll.
Virginia Tech’s loss in the coaches’ poll was a bit of a surprise, but overall the Hokies will climb in all rankings this season as long as they stick to their schedule.
