Samsung is developing an OLED display without a polarizing film that will usher in the era of energy-efficient panels with power consumption less than half of the battery consumption of current phone screens, the vice president of Samsung Display announced during a keynote speech on the topic of “Everlasting Evolution of Display with AI” at the ongoing IMID 2024 trade fair.
The vice president of Samsung’s display division, who made the announcement, claims that the new energy-efficient panels will result in flagship phones that do not require daily charging and have battery life of more than 24 hours even with intensive use.
Low power consumption that does not require charging for at least a day, vivid image quality that is indistinguishable from reality, and a large-format yet portable design are essential requirements for displays in the AI era.

It goes without saying that the entire keynote was presented in the context of the next generation of devices that will be tasked with artificial intelligence tasks. The images created using generative AI will require very high-resolution displays.that can naturally reproduce details and subtle color/gray differences that cameras cannot capture in the real worldsays Samsung.
They also need to be thin, light and flexible to accommodate a variety of form factors.”In addition, various functional features such as low power consumption are required to make the AI service even more effective” added Samsung’s vice president of mobile and IT displays.
That sounds suspiciously like an intention to use the 50% drop in power consumption of Samsung’s upcoming frugal OLED panels for sophisticated AI calculations, rather than aiming for a direct increase in battery life. Hopefully Samsung finds a good balance between the two, but even if the new screen technology results in phones that don’t need charging for a weekend, we’ll take it anyway.
