Brazil bans X: Outrage spreads after Elon Musk’s social media platform is blocked

Politicians and many other X users took to the social media platform on Saturday to express their disapproval over the website’s ban in Brazil, after a court-imposed deadline for the company to appoint a legal representative in Brazil expired.

“X is the most used news source in Brazil. It is what the people want. Now the tyrant de Voldemort is crushing people’s right to freedom of expression,” wrote Elon Musk, owner of X, after the decision.

This move is the latest chapter in an ongoing feud between a judge of the Brazilian Supreme Court and muskwhich also included freezing the financial accounts of the satellite internet provider Starlink in Brazil, which is 40 percent owned by Musk.

“The current Brazilian government likes to wear the mantle of a free democracy while crushing the people under its boot,” Musk wrote.

Judge orders immediate closure of Musk’s X in Brazil

In his ruling, Moraes ordered the complete and immediate suspension of X in the country pending compliance with all related court orders concerning X, including the payment of fines amounting to 18.5 million reais ($3.28 million) and the appointment of a legal representative in Brazil.

To prevent the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) to circumvent the ban, Moraes said individuals or companies attempting to maintain access to the social network could be fined up to R$50,000 per day, equivalent to nearly $9,000.

Several people supported Musk and expressed their outrage over the ban.

“Brazil is banning X for one reason: to suppress free speech and free thought. Not surprisingly, Lula supports this decision because he too wants to ban free speech and free thought. Biden has courted Lula, celebrated his election, and called him a personal friend. This too is not surprising,” wrote Texas Senator Ted Cruz in a post on X. “The Biden-Harris administration has shown nothing but contempt for free speech here in the United States.”

Outkick host Clay Travis also pointed out that the NFL is hosting a game in Brazil next week and called on the NFL to take action and refuse to play the game in the contested country.

X CLOSES BRAZILIAN OFFICE AFTER JUDGE THREATENED ARREST FOR CENSORSHIP INSTRUCTIONS

“I doubt the NFL would do this, but it would be a strong step in support of free speech to cancel next Friday’s game in Brazil because of the ban on X in the country and play the Eagles-Packers game at home in the US. US reporters, teams and players will not be able to tweet from Brazil,” Travis wrote in a post on X.

Cruz shared his post and added his own comments on the situation.

“Amen. If the NFL cares about the Constitution and free speech, they should cancel the game immediately,” Cruz wrote.

Musk said similar censorship could occur if Kamala Harris and Tim Walz take office.

“The attacks on free speech this year are unprecedented in the 21st century. This will also happen in America if Kamala/Walz come to power. Just listen to what they said,” Musk wrote.

De Moraes ordered X to close certain accounts earlier this year, accusing the platform of hosting “digital militias” that he believed Spreading misinformation and hate material regarding former President Jair Bolsonaro.

“Due to the demands of the Brazilian judiciary (de Moraes), which would require us to (secretly) break Brazilian, Argentine, American and international law, 𝕏 has no choice but to close our local offices in Brazil,” Musk said in an earlier post on X. “He is an absolute disgrace to the judiciary.”

On Friday, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva supported de Moraes’ decision and attacked Musk in an interview with Radio MaisPB for acting as if he were above the law.

“Any citizen, no matter where in the world, who invests in Brazil is subject to the Brazilian Constitution and Brazilian laws,” Lula said.
