Brandon Aubrey steps near the top

The Dallas Cowboys took a plunge after the 2023 NFL postseason by releasing kicker Brett Maher.

Maher, Dallas’ primary kicker for three seasons, struggled in the playoffs. He made two postseason field goals, but was an incredible 1-for-6 on extra-point attempts. The misses weren’t the driving force behind the Cowboys’ postseason exit, but Maher’s problems were enough for owner/general manager Jerry Jones to decide to hold an open kicking competition in the offseason.

The Cowboys didn’t make a splash move at this position. Instead, they let the little-known duo of Tristan Vizcaino and Brandon Aubrey compete for the job ahead of the 2023 season.

Aubrey won it easily. And he’s been the best kicker in the NFL ever since.

Aubrey was named All-Pro for his outstanding first NFL season and often showed off his big leg with the Cowboys. The former soccer player turned USFL star set franchise records in Dallas and made the Cowboys’ kicking problems a distant memory.

How good is Aubrey’s leg? He made one of the longest field goals ever in the NFL and will likely have a chance to break the all-time record at some point.

Brandon Aubrey’s longest field goal

Aubrey made the longest kick of his career in Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season. On Dallas’ first possession, he attempted a 65-yarder to cut the Baltimore Ravens’ 7-0 lead.

The kick split the posts and left space.

Aubrey’s mark set a new franchise record for the Cowboys. Maher previously owned it after making one from 63 yards out in 2019.

For Aubrey it was the 14th goal from over 50 yards of his career. He later added a 15th to move to an unimaginable record of 15-for-15 on kicks from 50 yards or more and 2 of 2 on kicks from 60 yards and beyond in his first two NFL seasons.

JERRY JONES: The owner says the Cowboys “couldn’t afford Derrick Henry” after the loss to the Ravens.

Longest field goals in NFL history

Although Aubrey’s field goal was one of the longest of all time, it was only one meter to break Justin Tucker’s record of 66 yards.

Below is the complete list of nine kickers to make field goals from at least 63 yards or more:

  • 66 yards – Justin Tucker, Ravens (2021)
  • 65 yards – Brandon Aubrey, Cowboys (2024)
  • 64 yards – Matt Prater, Denver Broncos (2013)
  • 63 yards – Brett Maher, Cowboys (2019)
  • 63 yards – Graham Gano, Carolina Panthers (2018)
  • 63 yards – David Akers, San Francisco 49ers (2012)
  • 63 yards – Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland Raiders (2011)
  • 63 yards – Jason Elam, Broncos (1998)
  • 63 yards – Tom Dempsey, New Orleans Saints (1970)

Justin Tucker’s longest field goal record

Tucker’s record-breaking goal came at the end of regulation time in a game against the Detroit Lions in 2021. The Baltimore Ravens asked Tucker to attempt a 66-yard field goal while trailing 17-16 with three seconds left lay, hoping to avoid a monumental surprise from the street.

Tucker had just enough distance to crash off the crossbar. It bounced into the air and through the uprights, giving the Ravens the win.

Aubrey nearly tied Tucker’s record in Dallas’ Week 1 game against the Cleveland Browns. He took the shot from 66 yards, but it was called back by a 5-yard delay of game penalty. He also managed one from 66 yards in the preseason, which didn’t count towards the NFL record.

Still, it could only be a matter of time before the 29-year-old gets a chance to keep up with Tucker – or overtake him and make NFL history.
