Brandon Aubrey of the Cowboys kicks a 65-yard field goal, 1 yard short of the NFL record

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brandon Aubrey is having fun with the Dallas Cowboys.

He extended his NFL record to 15 consecutive field goals of at least 50 yards without a miss at the beginning of his career, while breaks a franchise record with a 65-yard throw.

The Cowboys, however, have a major problem. Aubrey is not getting enough opportunities for shorter kicks, i.e. those from 32-33 yards, to score extra points, especially when they get to the end zone in catch-up mode.

Aubrey’s 65-yard kick in the first quarter of a 28:25 defeat on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens was by far the second longest in NFL history.

He caught another 45-yard pass just before halftime, but the Cowboys (1-2) trailed by 22 points before scoring three touchdowns in the final nine minutes – two attempts at 2-point conversions that failed before Aubrey could kick a PAT.

“I just go out there and take what’s asked of me,” Aubrey said. “You can’t choose the kicks you get, so you go out there and take them.”

The second-year kicker is tied for the NFL’s all-time leader with 10 converted field goal attempts this season, with half of them being at least 50 yards. Veteran Chris Boswell of the Pittsburgh Steelers has made 10 of 11 field goal attempts this season, and all four of his kicks were between 50 and 59 yards.

“You feel like they’re pretty automatic for him right now,” kick returner and receiver KaVontae Turpin said of Aubrey.

Dallas was only down 7-0 when Aubrey made his 65-yard kick, just shy of the NFL record set by the kicker standing on the other sideline. The Ravens’ Justin Tucker made a 66-yard kick on the final play of a 19-17 win at Detroit in 2021.

Both of those shots were taken indoors. The sunroof was closed for Sunday’s game at AT&T Stadium when Aubrey’s 55-yard shot cleared the crossbar by a few feet and also had room at the right post.

“Nothing else, I just go out there,” Aubrey said. “That’s kind of a range where we’re comfortable going out there and hitting it. … I’ve seen it a couple of times and at this point I know I can do it. The coaching staff knows I can do it.”

The 29-year-old former Major League Soccer candidate and Notre Dame football player, whom the Cowboys discovered in the USFL last year, managed a 66-yard kick at the end of the first half in the opener in Cleveland. That kick came after the whistle was blown due to a delay of game penalty. Dallas coaches considered letting Aubrey make an attempt from the 71-yard line, but changed their minds when the Browns got a returner into the end zone.

Tucker, who played all 198 NFL games for the Ravens in 13 seasons, missed a 46-yard throw attempt wide left in the fourth quarter.

Aubrey’s 15 field goals of at least 50 yards in just 20 games are already more than half of the Cowboys’ career record of 27, held by Dan Bailey from 2011 to 2017. Aubrey has 192 points on 46 of 48 field goals with 54 PATs, including 35 points already this season.

“I just want to go out there and do my job and make sure they can count on me,” he said. “You just want to be part of the team, a positive part of the team.”
