bp and NASA sign agreement to advance energy and space technology

BP America has entered into a Space Act Agreement with NASA to advance technological advances in both energy production and space exploration.

Through the collaboration, bp and NASA will leverage digital technologies and decades of technical expertise from operations in extreme environments.

The Space Act Agreement, based on the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, enables the two companies to exchange digital models, simulations and technical know-how.

The goal of this collaboration is to improve the visualization of devices in challenging locations, be it deep underwater or on distant planets.

BP believes this agreement will advance both energy production on Earth and human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

The first phase of the agreement focuses on developing standards and improving the capabilities of visualization and simulation models.

As the partnership progresses, the exchange of knowledge on remote operations practices, including security and communications, will be explored.

This could extend to process control, integrity management and the integration of predictive analytics and artificial intelligence.

Future collaborations between bp and NASA could focus on hydrogen, renewable fuel cells, high-performance batteries, solar power systems, small-scale nuclear fission systems, and advanced energy management and distribution.

This agreement builds on a historic relationship in which bp offshore employees are trained at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory and NASA has used bp’s Castrol lubricants for more than sixty years.

Ken Nguyen, senior technical program manager at BP, said: “BP has built a proud legacy of technological innovation by delivering the energy the world needs today while investing in the energy system of tomorrow.”

“As NASA seeks a permanent presence on the Moon and Mars, we see a unique opportunity for bp and NASA to work together at the forefront of digital technology to drive further innovation in energy and space.”

Earlier this month, BP reached an agreement with the Iraqi government to negotiate a rehabilitation program for the historic Kirkuk oil field.
