Bowen Yang says Sydney Sweeney “begged” SNL to make fun of her breasts

Bowen Yang has learned a lot about it Saturday Night Live over the course of his five seasons in the cast. But one of his more recent revelations is that the series’ creator and executive producer, Lorne Michaels, knows SNL Works best as a “reality show.”

As Yang explained in the latest episode of Formerly SNL In the podcast “Fly on the Wall” by actors Dana Carvey and David Spade, a “meta-narrative” surrounds the show in which Yang is repeatedly involved. It happened when he casually mentioned an unnamed host, causing several cast members to cry See what’s happening live last month. And now he’s probably done it again by revealing behind-the-scenes details euphoria star Sydney Sweeney’s hosting debut last March.

“Sometimes I get lost in the meta-narrative,” Yang said. “Every now and then I get caught up in a headline or a pep talk and I’m like, ‘Oh God, that’s so unfair, that’s so stressful, that’s not what I meant.’ Or I didn’t do that when (Dave) Chappelle was on stage with me.”

But Lorne Michaels understands, Yang said, that “that’s what the show is now,” adding, “I think Lorne is aware of that. I think Lorne knows it’s a reality show.”

This brought conversation to Sweeney’s episode, which sparked public backlash for relying too heavily on her body to make jokes. But Yang, who appeared in a Hooters sketch with Sweeney, said the actress was “an example of a host who came in and understood how consumed and perceived she was.”

“She came in and said, ‘Please everyone joke about my boobs,'” he revealed. “She practically begged everyone.”

Sweeney himself has told it before GQ that she consciously wanted to address the way people see her. “There are so many people out there who say, ‘Oh, she’s famous because she showed her breasts,'” she said, implying that she was in on the joke.

Yang continued that when he wanted to make sure Sweeney was comfortable for a skit that required them to make out, the actress dismissed any concerns by replying, “Bowen, I’m in.” euphoria.”

“But then she also said, ‘You’re living every gay man’s dream by having sex with me,'” he added. “She knows she has such great sexual powers that anyone would be thrilled to simulate sex with her. It’s so crazy.”

Despite being asked directly by Carvey and Spade, Yang declined to reveal the now-infamous mean-spirited host he previously called out: “I’ll tell you outside the microphone.”

But he said the obvious tears shed by the cast may have had as much to do with the stressful “environment” of SNL as was the case with the host in question. “Imagine staying up until 4 a.m. writing a skit, and then the host says, ‘I fucking hate this,'” Yang said. “Your nerves are frayed, you will experience a strange, bizarre emotional reaction.”

To be clear, Yang added, “I’m not saying I was the one who cried.”
