Bowen Yang Channels Moo Deng on ‘SNL’

Moo Deng has made it to Saturday Night Live.

The late-night sketch comedy show returned for its 50th season on September 28 and immediately began tackling some of pop culture’s most current moments: Moo Deng, the internet-favorite pygmy hippopotamus, and Chappell Roan.

Bowen Yang, who previously transformed into the iceberg that sank the Titanic, appeared behind the “Weekend Update” desk alongside co-hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che as Moo Deng, wearing a costume that depicted the natural dew of the hippopotamus envied.

Yang, as Moo Deng, took the opportunity to complain about the incessant media attention of the past few weeks and the need to “set some boundaries.”

His rant was a reference to Roan denouncing fans over the summer for “harassment” and “predatory behavior,” and a reference to a recent controversy after he canceled two shows due to “overwhelming” pressure.

“Reminder, women don’t owe you anything!” Yang said. “If I’m sitting in my pen, tripping over things or biting my trainer’s knee, I’m at work. This is the project. Don’t call my name or expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial best friend or because you appreciate my talent.”

When Jost asked what Moo Deng’s talent actually was, Yang explained: “Having a slippery body that bounces.”

“The only hippos in the media were either hungry, hungry or Jada Pinkett Smith in ‘Madagascar,'” Yang added. “But now I’m your favorite hippo’s favorite hippo and I’m thirsty, thirsty.”

Suddenly, Yang turned his chair to the side and was shot in the face by a hose for several seconds before everything returned to normal and he returned to the desk.

After Jost pointed out that it must be “so stressful” with the whole world watching Moo Deng, Yang said, “Sometimes I feel like I live my life in a cage, you know, like an animal, that’s trapped in a zoo for people to see.” look at it.”

Yang acknowledged that Moo Deng would not be in the same situation without the fans and community who were labeled as “Moo Deng Boo things,” but noted that the “harassment was unbearable” just before he began of being pelted with bananas and shellfish on stage.

When Jost pointed out the striking comparison between Moo Deng and Chappell Roan’s struggles with the quick rise to fame, Yang defended the “Good Luck, Babe” singer, adding, “By the way, leave her alone.”

“Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health,” Yang said. “We both deserve patience and mercy, so stop harassing her and stop throwing shellfish at her.”

Jost pointed out that Roan probably doesn’t have the same problem, but Yang assured him that it was only “a matter of time.”

“Colin, this is what society does. It puts young women on a pedestal and then beats them down with shellfish,” Yang explained.

The 50th season of “SNL” kicked off with first-time host Jean Smart and musical guest Jelly Roll. The show will return on October 5th with host Nate Bargatze and musical guest Coldplay.
