Bournemouth 3-1 Southampton: Cherries win the South Coast derby in the first half to bring misery to winless Saints

Bournemouth caused further misfortune for Southampton at the Vitality Stadium, thanks in part to Antoine Semenyo, as they beat their local rivals 3-1.

Southampton were looking to halt their decline after going into their sixth game with just one point to their name after a disappointing start to the season.

Despite a promising start which saw them put moderate pressure on the home side, it was Bournemouth who scored the breakthrough goal.

After a quickly taken free kick from Marcus Tavernier brought new signing Evanilson into the net, the Cherries confidently took control of the game and took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half thanks to goals from Semenyo and Lewis Cook.

After making three substitutions at half-time, Southampton came back and got a goal back thanks to Taylor Harwood-Bellis, but they failed to add to the pressure in any significant way.

The confidence that their consolation goal had initially given them seemed to evaporate as quickly as it came and the visitors were unable to take anything away.

Talking Point – Dismal start for Southampton

Despite an early attempt to apply pressure and the brief boost from their goal, Southampton looked completely toothless tonight. Their finishing in the final third was generally poor and even after attempts to regroup their performance was poor.

With just one point from their first six games, it’s hard to see how they can turn that around.

Player of the game

Antoine Semenyo: There was no competition for Semenyo in a great game as he assisted his side on their second goal, scored the third and looked like he could do more damage all the way.
