Borderlands director explains why the film would never be part of the canon

Anyone who has ever played the Borderlands games will have noticed changes in the film trailer. But according to director Eli Roth, these are two different things.

After a year of first-class live-action films, it’s going to be a summer full of blockbusters… so what could be better than combining the two?

Borderlands, an adaptation of the hit video game series, hits theaters on August 9—but it already looks very different than you might remember.

In the first game, players follow four Vault Hunters – Brick, Lilith, Mordecai, and Roland – who arrive on Pandora to search for the fabled Vault. Our villain is Commandant Steele, a member of the Crimson Lance who is trying to capture alien Atlas technology that he believes is hidden there.

This is not the case in the new film. quite how it works. Lilith (Cate Blanchett) returns to Pandora as a lone ranger and, after kidnapping his daughter Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), goes head-to-head with Atlas himself. Brick and Mordecai do not appear at all, while Tina only appears in a mini-game in the franchise.

The Borderlands movie feels a bit like it picked out the best parts from the entire franchise… and in Eli Roth’s eyes, that’s the case.

Speaking to Dexerto, the director confirmed that there will be plenty of Easter eggs in the action film for players to discover – but he did not reveal which ones they are.

“If I give away (my favorite) Easter egg, it’s not really an Easter egg anymore,” Roth explained. “But there’s a difference. The games are the games and the movie is the movie. That was one of the first things I talked about with Randy Pitchford (the creator).”

“I thought to myself, ‘I want to make a great, big, entertaining science fiction movie. I want to make a mix of Star Wars, Mad Max, The Fifth Element, Barbarella, Blade Runner and Rattlesnake. I want to have all of those things in there. I don’t want to just recreate what’s in the game.’

“He was super awesome and just said, ‘Do it.’ The games have their own canon and the movie is its own thing. So we changed things.”

But don’t panic… Borderlands doesn’t deviate completely from the plot of the first game. Lilith teams up with Claptrap (Jack Black), Roland (Kevin Hart), and Tannis (Jamie-Lee Curtis) to search for the lost vault, with supporting characters like Moxie (Gina Gershon) appearing along the way.

There’s also an Easter egg we can tell you about: Penn Jillette makes a cameo in the film as a preacher at a wedding, having already lent her voice in Borderlands 3 Pain – blink and you’ll miss her.
