Borderlands 3 is currently experiencing a massive increase in player numbers after the controversial film adaptation was released. Although the looter shooter was released almost five years ago, Borderlands 3 has a considerable community on Steam.

The Borderland Franchise is getting a lot of attention at the moment, but maybe not the kind it wants. Critical reception of the new Borderland The film is nothing short of a disaster, it currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 10%. For many non-gamers, this will be their first encounter with Borderlandso it may not be the best first impression. Nevertheless, it has not stopped the numbers of the latest main title in the video game series, Borderlands 3before swelling.

Lionsgate’s Borderlands film is a critical flop with 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to the numbers found on SteamDB, Borderlands 3 has seen a massive increase in player numbers in recent days, coinciding with the release of the critically panned film adaptation. Before the film’s release date Borderlands 3 was on average between 2,000 and 4,000 players on a good day. However, this number has slowly increased over the following days and is now at a 24-hour peak of 12,379. This will not help Borderlands 3 won’t make it onto the list of most played games on Steam anytime soon, but it’s still a significant increase from previous numbers.

Borderlands 3 sees huge increase in players on Steam

Given the extremely low box office figures of the Borderland film, it is unlikely that the increased player count is a direct result of players watching the film and then deciding to jump into the game. However, the attention surrounding the film’s release certainly helped to get the series’ name out there, and it could simply be a reminder of the franchise’s existence. The fact that Borderlands 3 is currently 90% off on Steam, making it only $5.99, which is certainly helpful too. In fact, the entire Borderland Franchise (less Tiny Tina’s Wonderland) is also available with a 94% discount as part of the Borderland Collection: Pandora’s Box.

Given the reception of the Borderland Film, the franchise will probably want forget about it as soon as possible. In the wake of its release, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford teased Borderlands 4which will certainly appease fans of the franchise who weren’t entirely happy with the film adaptation. It’s nice to finally get confirmation that a new major release is on the way, so fans have something to look forward to again.
