Boise State beats Portland State as Vikings return to action after canceled game

BOISE – Maddux Madsen threw three touchdown passes and scored another to help Boise State defeat Portland State 56-14 on Saturday night.

Dylan Riley rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and Cameron Camper caught touchdowns of 18 yards late in the second quarter and 52 yards to set up the first score of the third quarter that gave Boise State a 28-point lead. Riley scored on a 2-yard run that made it 42-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Boise State (2-1) finished with 609 total yards and 27 first downs. The Broncos scored 342 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 38 carries.

Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty, a Heisman candidate, had 11 carries for 127 yards, including a 68-yard run late in the first quarter.

The game marked the return to action for the Vikings (0-3), who had to cancel their Sept. 14 game against South Dakota because of a whooping cough outbreak on the Vikings’ team. Portland State announced earlier this week that players who may have come into contact with the disease will have to take a five-day course of antibiotics in order to travel to play against Boise State.

The Vikings answered after the Broncos scored first. Dante Chachere’s fumble near the goal line was recovered by running back Delon Thompson, scoring a touchdown for Portland State that made the score 7-7 with 5 minutes left in the first quarter.

Madsen hit Matt Lauter with a 4-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter, and his one-yard sneak made it 21-7 with 4:39 left in the first half.

Chachere scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
