Tyreek Hill believes the incident with Miami-Dade police escalated quickly after police bodycam footage was released showing the moments leading to his arrest on Sunday, Sept. 8, before his first game of the NFL season.

In an interview with NBC News, Hill said he felt like the incident with police “went from 0 to 100 in an instant” after he was pulled over on the street due to a traffic stop just a block from Hard Rock Stadium.

“If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, God knows I probably would have ended up in the worst possible scenario,” Hill told NBC News, adding that he would have been “shot or incarcerated” and “ended up behind bars” for a “simple speeding ticket.”

“And it’s crazy that officials would go that far,” he added.

His statement comes a day after Miami-Dade police released about 105 minutes of body-worn camera footage related to the incident. Stephanie Daniels, the police department’s director, said in a statement on social media that they released the footage earlier than their normal protocols dictate “to meet our commitment to transparency and maintaining public trust.”

In the video, a police officer can be seen walking up to the driver’s side of Hill’s car after he pulled over to the side of the road and knocking on the window of Hill’s car. In response, the NFL player told him to “stop banging on my window like that” when the officer asked Hill why he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Hill was then heard repeatedly telling the officer not to “knock on my window like that,” to which the officer said he needed to “knock” so he “knew I’m there” so he could “roll it down” and they could talk. Hill then said, “Give me my ticket so I can drive off. I’m late. Do what you gotta do,” according to the video, before rolling his window back up.

This prompted the officer to knock on his window again and tell him to “keep the window down.” He knocked on the window once more and then warned Hill to “keep the window down or I’m going to get you out of the car.” Finally, he told the NFL player to “get out of the car.”

As Hill opened the door of his car, the officer could be seen forcibly pulling him out of the driver’s seat while two other officers helped bring Hill to the ground. “What part of ‘get out’ don’t you understand?” the officer could be heard saying as he pulled the wide receiver to the ground.

“Hey, buddy, I’m under arrest, dude. I’m under arrest,” Hill said in the video as officers handcuffed him. “When we tell you to do something, you do it. You understand? Not what you want to do, but when we tell you to do it. You’re a little confused,” the officer said.

Following the incident, Miami-Dade Police launched an “internal investigation” and said one of the officers “involved in the incident” had been “placed on administrative duties” for the duration of the investigation.

In a statement on social media, the Miami Dolphins said the team was “saddened by the overly aggressive and violent behavior” of police officers toward Hill, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith before Sunday’s game.

“It is both unbearable and heartbreaking to see the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary violence and hostility toward these players. But it is also a reminder that not every situation ends peacefully, and we are grateful that this case did,” the team said.

“We commend the MDPD for taking the proper and necessary action to quickly release this footage, but we also urge them to take equally swift and decisive action against the officers who engaged in such despicable conduct,” the Miami Dolphins continued, adding that they would “stand by” Hill and her players.
