Body of tech magnate Mike Lynch recovered from wreck of Bayesian superyacht

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — The Italian coast guard said Thursday that the body of British technology magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily, from the Wreck of a superyacht whose builders had described them as unsinkable.

One woman is still missing. Her identity has not yet been established, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, is Reportedly missing. The family had celebrated his recent acquittal of fraud charges with his defense attorneys at the trial in the United States.

Five more were recovered by rescue teams after the tragedy on Monday.

The Bayesian, a 56-metre-long yacht sailing under the British flag sank in a storm early Monday when it was moored about a kilometer offshore. Civil defense officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado while out on the water. known as waterspoutand sank quickly.

Investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office collected evidence for a criminal investigation, which they immediately launched after the tragedy although no official suspects have been publicly identified.

The CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the manufacturer Bayesian, said superyachts like these are “the safest in an absolute sense”.

“Firstly, because they have very little surface area compared to a yacht that is upwind,” CEO Giovanni Costantino told Sky News on Wednesday. “Secondly, with the structure, the drift keel, they become unsinkable bodies.”

Investigators are now looking into why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by the Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Fifteen of the 22 people on board survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her one-year-old baby over the waves to save him. They were rescued by the sailing boat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat’s captain, Karsten Borner, said his boat suffered only minimal damage – the frame of a sunshade was broken – although he estimated the wind reached 12 Beaufort, the highest hurricane force on the scale.

He said he remained at anchor with engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the predicted storm approached.

“Another option is to weigh anchor before the storm and sail downwind on the open sea,” Borner wrote in a text message. However, he said that this may not have been possible for the Bayesian given its 75-meter-high mast.

“If there had been a stability problem caused by the extremely high mast, it would not have been better on the open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian must have watertight compartments specifically designed to prevent rapid, catastrophic sinking, even if some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not yet been officially identified by the Italian Coast Guard.

In addition to Hannah Lynch, the missing people include Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s US lawyers, and his wife Neda, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife Judy, and Recaldo Thomas, the superyacht’s chef.

Divers have problems to find the bodies in the hull of the yacht on the seabed at a depth of 50 meters.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we will find the next body,” said Luca Cari, fire department spokesman.

“It is very difficult to move in the wreckage. It can take up to 24 hours to move just one meter,” said Cari.
