Blumhouse enters Bakeoff TV with horror “Killer Cakes”

Literal “Scream” king Matthew Lillard teams up with Blumhouse again for an unexpectedly terrifying—and potentially delicious—two-part series: Amazon Prime Video’s “Killer Cakes.”

The unique baking competition will be hosted by Lillard, who starred in Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” For “Killer Cakes,” Lillard, who will also executive produce the miniseries, will be joined by two judges: “Halloween” actress Danielle Harris and experimental food artist and cookbook author Nikk Alcaraz. The series will see bakers attempting to “win some of the most terrifying challenges ever produced for television,” according to the logline. Contestants will work with Hollywood’s best horror special effects artists to create intentionally disgusting and disturbing cakes.

Because that’s what everyone wants: disgusting cake.

“Killer Cakes” comes from the production team of “Cake Boss,” with Ruth Amsel serving as showrunner. Jason Blum and Gretchen Palek are executive producers for Blumhouse Television; Scott Feely is an executive producer for High Noon Entertainment.

The series is produced by Blumhouse Television, ITV America’s High Noon Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios. “Killer Cakes” premieres on Prime Video on October 8.

Blumhouse Television and Amazon MGM have more spooky, culinary-focused projects in the works — script-wise, only. The two companies are behind the Prime Video film “House of Spoils,” which stars Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, “Euphoria” star Barbie Ferreira and “Succession” actor Arian Moayed. DeBose plays a chef who is tormented by a supernatural force while trying to open a restaurant. The film will premiere at Fantastic Fest 2024.

And Blumhouse founder Jason Blum made his own reality TV debut as a guest shark investor on “Shark Tank” in 2023.

Next, Blumhouse is working with director Paul Feig on an as-yet-untitled thriller based on the Netflix docuseries “Worst Roommate Ever.” The project marks the first time Blumhouse has produced both an unscripted and scripted series based on the same source material.

“Paul is the perfect director for this because he always manages to strike a balance between the dark and the light in his work,” Blum said in a press release, “and I’m very excited to see what he will bring to this story.”

Feig told IndieWire that his foray into the horror genre with Blumhouse was a natural step in his comedy career.

“Horror is the new comedy,” Feig said, giving a preview of the project. “We’re fine-tuning the script right now. We’re rewriting it and getting it to the point where it’s one of my films, but still staying true to the genre. I never want my comedy or my take on things to overtake the genre. I’m very conscientious about genres and respect them. I just want to play within the genres to make it more entertaining. (…) I want to surprise people with the cast.”
