Blue means happy this week

Get ready for a lot more sunshine this week, Rochester! Labor Day is the first day of a four-day stretch where there will be hardly any clouds, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. Although the holiday weekend ends on the cool side, it will warm up again toward the end of the week.

Strong high pressure is moving into the Great Lakes, with Rochester on the eastern (cool) side of the system. A brisk northwest wind has brought much cooler, drier Canadian air to the region, with highs only reaching the mid-60s on Labor Day. Winds will gradually die down tonight, and with clear skies and low humidity, temperatures away from Lake Ontario will drop sharply overnight. Near Rochester, overnight lows will be in the upper 40s.

However, parts of the Southern Tier are at risk of frost. In fact, a freeze warning is in effect for parts of the Southern Tier from midnight to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Despite this very cold start to the work week, abundant sunshine and gradually shifting winds will bring relatively milder air to the region on Tuesday. Temperatures will still be on the cool side, but highs will be just under 21 degrees. Depending on how far temperatures fall south of Rochester on Monday night, some cities could see temperatures above 18 degrees on Tuesday.

There will also be plenty of sunshine on Wednesday and Thursday, which is just perfect for the start of the school year. Maximum temperatures on each of these days will be between 25 and 27 degrees. All that sunshine will surely lift people’s spirits as the start of meteorological autumn continues.

Rain showers may not occur again in the region until Friday evening, as tropical moisture accumulates ahead of a cold front that is expected to move through over the weekend.
