Blue Alert for suspect last seen in Memphis, Hall County, Texas

Texas authorities issued a blue alert early Friday morning for 33-year-old Seth Altman, who was last seen in Memphis and is wanted in connection with the injury to a police officer.

Altman is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall and weighing 220 pounds. He has blue eyes and red or auburn hair. He was last seen around 11 p.m. Thursday wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans in the 200 block of South Fourth Street in Memphis.

Authorities consider Altman “armed and dangerous” and are warning the public not to approach him but to call 911 if he is seen.

Altman is “wanted by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office for involvement in injury to an officer,” according to a wireless emergency alert sent statewide Friday morning.

Details about the incident that led to the warning were sparse Friday as the situation continued to evolve.

What is a Blue Alert?

“Blue Alerts are intended to expedite the apprehension of violent criminals who kill or seriously injure local, state or federal law enforcement officers,” said the Texas Department of Public Safety, which issues the alerts. The warnings are communicated to the public through various channels “to provide information and leads for law enforcement.”

As part of the criteria for issuing a blue alert, the suspect must have killed or seriously injured a law enforcement officer and investigators must believe the suspect “poses a serious danger or threat to the public and other law enforcement personnel.”

The program was introduced in 2008 by Gov. Rick Perry.

Where is Hall County?

Hall County is located in the southeastern Texas Panhandle, approximately 85 miles southeast of Amarillo and 140 miles northeast of Lubbock.

Around 2,800 people live in the rural district. Memphis is the county seat and largest city with around 2,000 residents.
