Blown tires and a borrowed truck make Dodge City’s victory even sweeter

Ross Ashford and Coy Rahlmann’s road to first place in team roping at the Dodge City (Kanas) Roundup included an unexpected stop in Limon, Colorado. The team ropers blew a trailer tire loaded with eight heads. Because of some truck problems earlier in the week, they drove to Dodge City in a borrowed truck. In the constant back and forth between vehicles, they forgot to bring their tire changing tools. Ashford and Rahlmann successfully caught the attention of a truck also headed to Dodge City by jumping wildly up and down on the shoulder of I-70.

Ashford said on the side of the road: “If we (Ashford and Rahlmann) don’t win this rodeo, then we’re not really living.” It looks like the duo is really living.

Jess Pope, a Canadian native, won his home state’s top-paying rodeo in style. Pope’s 91-point ride on Championship Pro Rodeo’s Hooey Rocks in the finals secured him the go-round and average win. Pope leaves Dodge City with $6,605 for his spot in the PRCA Bareback Riding World Standings. That dollar amount helps the No. 20 cowboy get closer to the necessary No. 15 position to make the trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Steer wrestler Will Lummus prepared for his victory in Dodge City on August 4 by winning the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series the night before. He then moved on to Kansas, where Lummus finished sixth in the first round, second in the second round and third in the finals to win the average. His total winnings in Dodge City are $9,442.

Brody Cress joins a select club of back-to-back champions in saddle bronc riding in Dodge City. Cress won the rodeo last year on Frontier Rodeo’s Miss Ellie. This year, Cress rode another Frontier Rodeo horse, Two Hour Break, and repeated his victory. From July 29 through the short-go in Dodge City on August 4, Cress won $23,238 — not bad for a week’s earnings.

Reigning world champion Riley Webb emerged victorious in tie-down roping. Webb remained consistent for three rounds, placing third in the first round, fourth in the second round and second in the final. Webb won a total of $10,704.

Paige Jones saved her best barrel racing run for last. Jones won the first round with a time of 17.44. She came back to her best and ran almost the same time at 17.45. Her time of 17.25 seconds in the final secured her the average win. The No. 13 cowgirl in the WPRA World Rankings wins $8,026.

Tony Reina took the average win in the three-head steer roping event by finishing second in the first round and staying consistent in the second and third rounds. Overall, Reina earned $4,270 for his solid performances.

Bradi Good’s first win at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo came from riding Mutton Bustin’ as a child. In 2024, Good’s performance in breakaway roping not only earned her $4,040, but also helped her rise from 15th to 12th in the WPRA Breakaway World Standings.
