Black bear attacks 3-year-old child at campsite near Yellowstone National Park

A 3-year-old girl was attacked by a black bear in her tent at a campground near Yellowstone National Park, Montana officials report.

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), the incident late Sunday in Red Lodge required the evacuation of the private campground.

“A bear attacked a child in a tent,” the agency said in a statement. The victim was taken to a medical facility in Billings.

Further information on her status was not immediately available.

FWP subsequently announced that a black bear had been “captured and euthanized” at that location and that the bear was believed to be “involved in the incident.”

A wildlife ministry official told the Associated Press that the child attacked was three years old.

Red Lodge is located north of the Wyoming-Montana border, near Yellowstone National Park.

“There were attractants in the area,” said game warden Randy Hutzenbiler, which may have included food and unsecured garbage.

The Nature Conservancy recommends keeping food, garbage and anything with an odor outside of tents and storing it in bear-proof containers or vehicles.
