Bills quarterback Josh Allen injures hand in win against Cardinals

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s second rushing touchdown on Sunday was a leap into the end zone over Arizona Cardinals’ Budda Baker that gave the team a two-score lead in the fourth quarter, but Allen appeared to injure his left hand as he landed.

After jumping over Baker, Allen wrapped his hands around the football to prepare for impact as defensive lineman Justin Jones tried to stop the quarterback from falling into the end zone. As a result, Allen ended up with his left hand wrapped around and under the ball.

“The first rushing touchdown, I dropped my shoulder because I knew it was a corner,” Allen said. “The second time, I knew it was Budda, and Budda is a good player and he’ll smack the ball around your ears, so I decided to go up and over, but you probably can’t make a living doing that, but that’s the way it is.”

With less than three minutes left in the first half, the Bills rallied from a 17-3 deficit to win 34-28.

Allen’s left hand and wrist were bandaged by athletic trainers on the sidelines after the goal, and he played the rest of the game. He said afterward that his hand was “fine.” When asked if he would get an X-ray, Allen said, “Well, probably, yeah, I don’t know yet.” After the game and his press conference, Allen briefly went to the stadium’s X-ray room. In the postgame locker room, he did not have his hand bandaged.

“We’ll find out again – I’m not entirely sure,” Allen said. “I’m not a doctor. But I guess I just stumbled upon it.”

The Bills face a brief turnaround in Week 2 as they play the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football. Coach Sean McDermott said in his postgame press conference that he did not have enough information to give an update on the team’s injuries.

“Yeah, I’m always concerned when someone gets hurt,” McDermott said. “In this case, definitely, Josh. I’ll know more hopefully in the next few hours. Maybe even when I walk back down the hall here, so I’m always concerned.”

Nickel cornerback Taron Johnson left the game on the first drive with a forearm injury. Defensive back Cam Lewis stepped in for Johnson and had several big plays, forcing backup cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram to take on a larger role in the team’s dime package, including defending the Cardinals’ final incomplete pass on fourth down to end the game.

Allen rebounded from a less than ideal start to the game, which included a sack-fumble on the first drive, by completing 18 of 23 passes (78.3%) for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He also had nine carries for 39 yards and the two rushing touchdowns.

He became the fifth player in NFL history to score multiple touchdowns in a season-opening game, both passing and running, and the first since Troy Aikman in 1998. It was Allen’s fourth career game with multiple touchdowns through the air and on the ground, tying him with Steve Young for the most such games in NFL history.

“I always try to keep an eye on (Allen),” McDermott said. “We were talking in my locker room afterward and someone said, ‘Hey, Josh brought that guy in on me on that play?’ And I said, ‘I keep an eye on him most of the time to make sure he’s doing everything right and not getting hit late or whatever.'”
