Big dreams hold things together at the Big Colorado Sports Complex

The Future Legends Sports Complex in Windsor, Colorado, has the potential to become a premier destination for youth sports. But “might” seems to be the key word these days.

The complex will be used by teams from summer 2024 and has some great facilities; however, the “big complex” seems a long way away.

It seems as if only dreams hold together the complex, which is expected to attract 1 million people annually by 2023.

It’s hard to see this project fail because it’s something the community has been looking forward to for nearly 10 years: a large sports complex with fields, a stadium, a hotel, restaurants and more. It seems like it’s its own little “sports city” in East Windsor.

Future Legends Sports Complex in Windsor, Colorado, is struggling

When this project first came up, it was for the “world’s largest sports park” at Highway 257 and County Road 74, north of Windsor. In 2018, it was scaled down and relocated to Windsor to the existing Diamond Valley Sports Complex.

Construction on the Future Legends Sports Complex began in fall 2020; four years later, the full scope of the project is still difficult to predict.

While there are some things about Future Legends that are fine, including the multi-purpose dome (which everyone loves), it is still a far cry from the “Future Legends” they envisioned.

I have a friend who is a local softball coach and he commented on how much he and his team enjoyed the dome. Local teams Northern Colorado Owls (baseball), Northern Colorado Hailstorm and Northern Colorado Rain (minor league soccer) play games at the facility.

Future legends examine lawsuits and liens

The 6,500-seat TickeStarter Stadium, if built, would be great, as would the dorm and all the other things they want to do. However, according to BizWest, the Future Legends’ owner is facing $22 million in lawsuits and liens (as of August 2024), which has stalled construction.

In addition to the legal issues, according to BizWest, the City of Windsor has required Future Legends to make public safety improvements to the complex by November 2024, otherwise the city will not renew its temporary building permit.

Many people in the Northern Colorado community are very supportive of the project and hope that everything goes in the right direction to complete this dream project.
