Bienville Parish man drowns while fishing near Lake Bistineau dam

LAKE BISTINEAU, Louisiana (KSLA) – The search for the body of a Bienville Parish man who drowned near the Lake Bistineau Dam in Bossier Parish will resume at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 21), the Bossier Sheriff’s Office reports.

He was identified by family members as 55-year-old Kenneth Gibson of Ringgold.

Gibson and his nephew were fishing near the dam around 1 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 20) when they attempted to cross a slab of rock over which water was flowing rapidly, Sheriff Julian Whittington said. The two men lost their footing and fell into the fast-flowing water.

Gibson’s nephew swam to shore and got out of the water. Gibson was swept under the dam and into a channel of swirling water and never resurfaced, authorities said.

Bossier sheriff’s deputies and personnel from the South Bossier Fire District, Bienville Fire District, Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries and other agencies were unable to locate Gibson’s body. The search was called off for the night.

On July 29, work began on lowering Lake Bistineau in the parishes of Bienville, Bossier and Webster to contain the spread of giant sage.
