According to the White House, a telephone conversation between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping is planned in the coming weeks.
This update coincided with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s visit to Beijing, where he met with Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat. Both countries also mentioned an upcoming phone call between their military leaders.
China has announced plans for a second round of talks with the United States on artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, the White House mentioned that John Podesta, the president’s senior adviser for international climate policy, will soon visit China, but no specific date was given.
During Sullivan’s visit, official statements from both countries reiterated their stances on issues such as technology restrictions, Taiwan, the South China Sea and Ukraine. Although Biden is not seeking re-election in November, communication between the two leaders is crucial as they navigate the complex bilateral relationship.
The previous phone call between Biden and Xi in April followed their 2023 meeting in California. Communication between the two superpowers has faced challenges in recent years due to tensions and pandemic-related restrictions, with incidents such as Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in 2022 and a diplomatic dispute in 2023 further complicating matters.
