BFHS changes to sports classification 4A

Bonners Ferry High School has moved from the 3A high school sports classification to 4A after the Idaho High School Activities Association voted on a new classification system.

In the new 4A, the range is 350-699 students. The previous 3A was 320-639.

High school sports in Idaho now have six different classification levels instead of five, and 1A Division I and II are combined. This decision was met with little approval among northern Idaho schools, as a majority of northern Idaho school superintendents voted against the change.

The change in classification has no major impact on the Intermountain League, of which Bonners Ferry is a member.

Timberlake and Coeur d’Alene Charter remain the Badgers’ league opponents. CDA Charter offers a limited number of sports.

However, since schools have the opportunity to request relegation to a lower league depending on the sport, Moscow High School/Middle School will only be a league opponent in football.

For Badger football, the league remains 4A/3A District I, which includes Bonners, CDA Charter, Timberlake, Kellogg, Priest River, St. Maries, Grangeville and Orofino.

For the other BFHS sports, the classification is currently not changing.
