Beta shows Android users can control resolution and rotation of external displays

Google recently released the first beta of Android 15 QPR1. According to Android expert Mishaal Rahman, the beta update shows that a new page will be added to the Settings app, which will be of interest to those who like to connect their phone to an external display. Based on the code strings discovered by Rahman, users can use the options in Settings > Connected Devices > External Display.
The code strings indicate that users can set the external display resolution to 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 1024 and 1280 x 720. Under the More options Under the External Display heading, advanced resolutions are listed such as 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, 720 x 480, and more. Users can also change the rotation of the display from standard to 180°, 270°, or 90°. Google notes that if you change the rotation or resolution of the external display while the external display is connected, running apps may pause.
Rahman was able to “fully enable” the new External Display page on his Pixel 8 Pro, and screenshots of the pages show a toggle switch that allows users to disable the external display. This button allows you to prevent the external display from mirroring your phone by simply tapping the toggle switch, without having to physically disconnect the display from your handset.
This is obviously in line with Google’s attempt to improve the desktop mode that has been available to Android users since Android 10 in 2019. However, the feature still needs to be improved to become more accessible to average Android users. The new rotation and resolution options for an external display attached to an Android device could be a help to both developers and average Android users.

Google is reportedly working on improving Android’s desktop mode. Over the past two years, attempts have been made to fix issues that make Android’s desktop mode difficult for users to manage multiple (three or more) windows open at once. Ultimately, Google wants to make Android’s desktop mode as powerful as Samsung’s Dex and Motorola’s Ready For. Google is moving in the right direction.
