Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda from RB Leipzig were too strong for FC Augsburg

As of: September 28, 2024 5:20 p.m

RB Leipzig secured itself in the top group of the Bundesliga table with a clear 4-0 (2-0) win on Saturday (September 28th, 2024) against FC Augsburg. Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda (both of whom were successful as goalscorers and preparers) are mainly responsible for this – and a missed penalty by FCA captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. The fourth RB goal came from Xavi Simons.

Minimalist football has never really been something that has been associated with RB Leipzig – but this season it is exactly what has led to success so far. Before the game against Augsburg, four goals scored are enough to get eight points from the first four games. And the next success of the season also had a lot to do with the fact that Marco Rose’s team initially got the absolute most out of the game.

Rose satisfied for the first time

We don’t want to make too much of it“said Rose on the sports show microphone after the game.”A few things came together today that led to this result. But it was also a good performance for the first time this season over 90 minutes.

Jess Thorup, Augsburg coach, spoke of a “deserved defeat“and struggled with how to start the party.”The game was almost lost after 0:3.”

Sesko ended his lull with a lightning brace

RB didn’t set off any football fireworks this time either, but there were enough strong individual players who got the team on the right track within four minutes. Sesko only gathered courage after a short dribble from 22 meters and let the ball hit the corner to make it 1-0 (11th), then the Slovenian international took advantage of an exemplary cross from David Raum to score the second goal (15th).

Sesko had remained goalless in the first four league games and had almost no chance of getting on the top scorer list, in which he is considered one of the contenders for the top places – now there was a quick double relief blow. Augsburg missed exactly that. After a foul by Lutsharel Geertruida, the visitors were awarded a penalty, but Jeffrey Gouweleeuw was denied by Peter Gulacsi (27′).

Openda is also involved

Two shots on goal and one penalty against them – Leipzig had this record until the 40th minute, so the result for the Rose team was really 100 percent of what could be achieved. That only changed at the end of the first half, when Antonio Nusa (40′) and Openda (42′) missed two more really good opportunities.

Before the break, Openda, who also set up Sesko’s first goal, had left his goalscoring qualities hidden, but immediately after it he showed them. Xavi Simons once again pushed the French free in front of the opposing goal and this time Openda stayed cool (46th). It was the striker’s third goal of the season, who scored 24 times in the Bundesliga last season.

Nothing happens after Simons hits

Leipzig’s fourth goal was neither by Openda nor by Sesko, but the latter was the preparer against Augsburg, who were becoming increasingly weaker. Another good cross from Raum was passed on by Sesko to Simons, who made the score 4-0 from ten meters (58′).

The game was finally decided and with it all the air was gone. Thanks to the sweeping victory, the Leipzig team managed to move up to second place in the table, but Bayer Leverkusen (playing at FC Bayern Munich on Saturday evening) and Eintracht Frankfurt (at Holstein Kiel on Sunday) still have the opportunity to move past. Meanwhile, Augsburg (15th) is in danger of falling into the relegation zone with just four points.
