Whether you’re “leafing it out” or not, fall is only a month away! The warm temperatures we experienced in July and August will slowly drop and our comfortable, cool temperatures that Yoopers love will arrive with what we hope will be a long fall. Fall also brings weather that’s great for planting trees and fall bulbs. The Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District (CLMCD) encourages residents to take advantage of the fall planting season by planting fall pots and bulbs. Fall offers numerous benefits and sets the stage for bold spring blooms and a healthier landscape.

Why autumn is the ideal planting time

Fall is an excellent time to plant young trees and bulbs because the cooler temperatures and higher humidity create ideal conditions for rooting. When trees and bulbs are planted in fall, they can focus on developing a strong root system without the stress of summer heat. By spring, these plants are well rooted and ready to thrive, resulting in more vigorous growth and earlier flowering.

Environmental benefits of plug trees

Potted trees, small trees and young trees grown in containers are particularly well suited to fall planting. These trees are less susceptible to transplant shock and can establish themselves more quickly in their new environment. The roots have ample time to grow and anchor the tree before the ground freezes, which is critical to their winter survival. Once spring arrives, these trees can take full advantage of the warmer weather and longer days to grow vigorously.

Planting trees in the fall also contributes to local environmental health. Trees play an important role in improving air quality, providing habitat for wildlife, and stabilizing soil to prevent erosion. In addition, by planting native species, residents can help preserve the area’s natural biodiversity and ensure that local ecosystems remain resilient.

Spring flowers from autumn bulbs

If you want to add a splash of color to your garden, plant bulbs in the fall that will bloom in the spring. Daffodils, tulips and alliums are just a few examples of bulbs that can be planted in the fall to provide a stunning display after the snow melts. These bulbs need the cold winter period to grow, so planting in the fall is essential for them to thrive.

By planting a variety of bulbs, you can ensure a continuous display of flowers from early spring through late summer. With careful planning and planting, gardeners can now enjoy a range of flowers that will enhance their garden and support local pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Supporting local conservation efforts

The Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District is holding its annual fall tree/bulb sale. Pre-orders are now available through October 2nd. Pickup will be October 17th and 18th in Sault Ste. Marie.
