Queen, King, Ace, Spy is undeniably an underrated film. Despite winning the BAFTA Award for Most Outstanding British Film and receiving three Oscar nominations, the film has not received the respect it deserves in the years since its release. In particular, despite talks of a sequel since its release in 2011, the project has seemingly fallen by the wayside, and that annoys me a little.
The Cold War spy film is based on John le Carré’s 1974 novel of the same name. Set in early 1970s London, the story revolves around a team of British secret agents trying to find a Soviet double agent who has infiltrated the agency. Le Carré’s novel was also the basis for the critically acclaimed 1979 BBC television series of the same name, which starred Alec Guinness in the lead role of Smiley. While both adaptations are very entertaining, I believe that Gary Oldman’s version remains one of the most underrated modern contributions to the entire spy film genre.

There will most likely not be a sequel
It is a mystery to me that Queen, King, Ace, Spy never got a sequel. It was not only a critical and commercial success, but The novel on which the film is based is only the first of Le Carré’s Smiley vs Karla trilogyThe second and third books in the series are The honorable student (1977) and Smileys People (1979). This means that there is no shortage of material that could be used for a sequel.
Out of Queen, King, Ace, Spy2011 to December 2021, rumors circulated that a sequel was in the works, although it was not known whether the sequel would be based on The honorable student or Smileys PeopleUnfortunately, in 2021 it became known that the rights to the Smiley vs Karla The trilogy was returned to Le Carré’s estate, meaning that a sequel to the acclaimed spy film is now unlikely. But that doesn’t stop me from hoping for a long-awaited sequel.
