Bears RB impresses with versatility in camp: “He’s almost a receiver”

D’Andre Swift’s 42-yard pass reception on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills may have surprised some, but the Chicago Bears certainly weren’t.

Swift, Chicago’s running back, has shown off his talent as a receiver during camp and everyone in Halas Hall noticed.

Swift’s outstanding performance was the subject of a report by Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic on Wednesday.

“Swift has stood out the last few weeks, whether he’s catching passes or rushing out from behind blocks as a runner,” Fishbain said. “It’s easier to evaluate pass catching in camp, and the evaluation has been positive.”

“I mean, he’s pretty darn close to being a receiver,” Bears linebacker TJ Edwards said of Swift, according to Fishbain. “That’s really good for us, though. I think especially after last year, we wanted to improve that, and we’re doing one-on-one situations every day where we’re in protective gear. Being able to go up against him … really helps us. He’s really dynamic, he’s fast and he’s got really good hands, so he definitely makes it tough.”

Fishbain also described in detail how one particular catch by Swift caused a stir and sparked excitement among watching fans.

“When Brett Rypien’s pass floated over the linemen, it didn’t look like it could be caught – especially not for the 5-foot-10 running back,” Fishbain said.

“D’Andre Swift had other ideas. He jumped up and caught the screen pass with one hand before running down the field. It was the play of the day on Wednesday and drew huge cheers from Chicago Bears fans who had been waiting for a big play.”

On Saturday, Swift’s 42-yard catch-and-run after a shovel pass from Caleb Williams was once again the standout play of the day for Chicago.

The Bears running back could be in for a monstrous season.
