BCHS Football: Bears lose season opener

RUSSELLVILLE – Butler County faltered in the second half as Logan County pulled away 44-13 in the high school football team’s season opener on Friday, Aug. 23.

At the end of the opening quarter the score was 7:7 between the Bears and the Cougars.

Butler County and Logan County went into halftime tied at 13-13, but the Cougars were able to pull away.

Logan County led 27-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Logan County delivered a strong finish and dominated the entire final phase offensively and defensively.

Quarterback Garrett Phelps led Butler County, completing 16 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Phelps led Butler County through the air and on the ground, running 10 times for 92 yards.

Lonnie Phelps and Tucker DeJarnette each caught a touchdown pass for the Bears.

Clayton Deweese caught three passes for 55 yards, becoming Butler County’s top receiver.

Butler County managed 21 carries for 132 yards.

On defense, Kevin Robins recorded 11 tackles for the Bears.

After Robins, Lonnie Phelps and Clay Steff each recorded eight tackles for visiting Butler County.

The Bears still have regular season games against Webster County, Warren Central, Grayson County, Hart County, Franklin-Simpson, Bethlehem, Adair County, Glasgow and Ohio County.

Butler County’s (0-1) next game is on Friday, August 30, at Webster County (0-1).
