The BBC had to cancel a highly anticipated event Prime time interview with former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson after one of the channel’s most prominent presenters made an “embarrassing” mistake.
According to a report by Reuters Laura Kuenssbergwho previously served as the BBC’s political editor and now presents its flagship Sunday morning news program, mistakenly sent the notes she had prepared for her questions to Johnson.
Kuenssberg admitted her crime, saying: “It is very frustrating, and there is no point in pretending it is anything other than embarrassing and disappointing, as there are many important questions to ask.”
She added: “But aside from red faces, honesty is the best policy.”
As a publicly funded broadcaster, the BBC faces intense scrutiny over its approach to holding politicians to account. Top political correspondents are often accused of bias towards one party or the other on social media.
The interview, scheduled to air Thursday evening, had been promoted as Johnson’s first significant television appearance to discuss his upcoming memoir.
Johnson was expected to elaborate on his government’s response Covid pandemic and the controversial parties that took place there Downing Streetwhich played a role in his eventual resignation as prime minister.
Johnson, who was prime minister from 2019 to 2022, is expected to publish his memoirs, “Unleashed,” on October 10. A BBC spokesman said the error had made the interview “untenable” and that the broadcaster and Johnson’s team had mutually agreed to the cancellation.
