Bayer Leverkusen: Forgotten German goalkeeper talent wants to stop Alonso | Sport

His career was like a rollercoaster for a long time. A German goalkeeper has now found happiness at Feyenoord Rotterdam.

Timon Wellenreuther (28) was named number 1 for the Dutch Cup winners by new coach Brian Priske (47) before the season.

Now Wellenreuther wants to become German champion Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League (Thursday, 6.45 p.m., DAZN and here in the live ticker) stop.

Wellenreuther was once considered one of the greatest German goalkeeping talents.

In spring 2015, at the age of 19, he made his professional debut for Schalke. Eight first division games. And even his debut in the Champions League against Real Madrid – he was in goal for both round of 16 games (0:2/4:3). Wellenreuther still holds a record to this day: the youngest German goalkeeper to play in the most important European club competition.

After playing for Schalke, Mallorca, Willem II and Anderlecht, Wellenreuther, who played ten games for the DFB U21 team, finally ended up in Rotterdam after various loan deals.

In 2024, the Karlsruhe native won the cup with Feyenoord and also the Supercup before the start of the season. And: he was able to prevail against Dutch national goalkeeper Justin Bijlow (26) in the battle for the goal.

In July, Wellenreuther extended his contract, which was due to run until 2025, until 2027.

Wellenreuther, who was also a hot candidate in Eindhoven, explained: “The support of the public, the trust I feel from the club and the staff: these were all important reasons for me to want to stay at Feyenoord. I’ve had many great moments here, last season in the cup final, and I’m looking forward to achieving even more success in the coming years.”

Now the start of the new season in the premier class with the duel against Leverkusen. Bayer coach Xabi Alonso (42) says of Wellenreuther: “I know him. He is active, good on the ball, always pays close attention. We have done our job, but I have never met him personally.” Perhaps it will come up on the sidelines of the game…
