Barcelona vs Villarreal player ratings: Robert Lewandowski challenges Kylian Mbappe with Pichichi as Raphinha and Lamine Yamal rampage – but Marc-André ter Stegen’s horrific injury overshadows El Madrigal’s defeat

The Polish striker scored two more goals and the Blaugrana’s dangerous players once again performed well, but it was a bittersweet night.

Barcelona celebrated an impressive 5-1 victory at Villarreal on Sunday night in a game marred by an injury to Marc-André ter Stegen. After a Villarreal goal was disallowed for offside, Barcelona took the lead when Robert Lewandowski perfectly converted a superb pass from Pablo Torre in the 20th minute.

The Polish striker scored his second goal of the game – and his sixth of the season – moments later, using an acrobatic technique to put the ball over the goal line after a dangerous cross from Lamine Yamal had caused panic in the Villarreal penalty area.

But Villarreal quickly came back into the game when Barcelona’s defense switched off and Nicolas Pepe set up Ayoze Perez to make it 2-1.

The mood at the Estadio de la Ceramica changed when Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury in injury time. The German landed awkwardly after a catch and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher, sparking fears that he could be out for some time.

Inaki Pena came on and was called upon to save Pepe’s fierce shot early in the second half, and the former Arsenal winger also had a goal disallowed for offside.

The visitors were under pressure but Torre restored the two-goal lead on the hour mark. Lewandowski then had the chance to complete his hat-trick but his penalty hit the post before Raphinha capped off a great individual performance with two late goals to make it 5-1.

The result may have been flattering for the Blaugrana – Villarreal had three goals disallowed – but that may not matter to Hansi Flick and his players, who have won all six of their La Liga games this season.
