Barbra Streisand’s urgent appeal to Harris/Walz on “Jewish Women” Zoom

Barbra Streisand was the star of the Jewish Women For Kamala online Zoom rally Thursday night (August 15) in support of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. The latest in a series of similar digital rallies that brought together white men, Deadheads, Swifties, black men and women, and several other niche voter demos, organizers said, drawing more than 16,000 attendees, many of whom no doubt tuned in to hear what the Oscar-winning legend had to say about Vice President Kamala Harris and her vice presidential candidate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

“They say Jewish women are known for speaking their minds and saying what they think, and I’m one of them,” said Streisand, sitting in a custom-made library. “I’m so tired of hearing (former President Donald) Trump put down America by saying, ‘Make America Great Again,’ because America has been great since 1776. And it’s still great in 2024.”

Streisand said she supported Harris/Walz because she wants a president who believes that “we can accomplish anything when we work together.” She praised the Democratic ticket for bringing a new sense of “optimism, energy and enthusiasm” to the campaign since Harris replaced President Biden more than two weeks ago. It was an unprecedented change at the top of the ticket, and it came with less than 100 days to go before the close race ends.

The singer called Harris a “great combination of compassion and strength, a cheerful warrior who will fight for the values that so many of us hold dear.” She also praised the vice president for consistently championing programs that support gender equality, social justice and voting rights, while pointing out that during a recent appearance at a rally with evangelical voters, Trump promised that if they voted for him just this once, they “wouldn’t have to vote again.” Some viewed the statement as the former one-term president’s latest attempt to undermine democratic norms.

“Can you believe that?” Streisand said. “In contrast, Kamala Harris understands what a privilege it is to vote! And her commitment to health care, social security, education and fighting climate change are the policies of someone who cares about the future of our country, our children and our planet… not just the profits of big oil.”

Streisand pointed out that women are caring beings who look after others and can think “beyond themselves,” while Trump called her someone who “only cares about herself” and “calls every woman who questions him” “mean.”

“I don’t think he respects women at all,” Streisand said in response to Trump’s appointment of several conservative Supreme Court justices who overturned half a century of precedent by overturning Roe v. Wade. “I don’t know of any other law that gives the government control over men’s bodies,” she said of the decision that struck down federal abortion rights.

“In some people’s eyes, women obviously don’t count… oh, but in November, when the votes are counted, we will!” she added with a sly smile, before going as Barbra-esque as possible, pausing briefly to drink water from a flowered teacup through a straw before leaning toward Trump’s vice presidential nominee, Senator JD Vance. She criticized the Ohio-born senator during his first term for his stance that “women should stay at home,” as well as her description of his belief that women’s careers were responsible for the nation’s “moral decline.”

“But Vance’s moral compass seems to be off track, because he sees nothing wrong with his running mate – a convicted felon who talks about law and order – but thinks that doesn’t apply to him,” she said of Trump, who, in addition to his 34 capital crimes convictions in New York in his hush money trial against a porn star, faces at least three other major trials related to his hoarding of government documents at his Florida residence and federal election interference in his attempt to rig the outcome of the 2020 election, which he lost to President Biden.

She warned that Trump and Vance had previewed their plans by agreeing to the ultra-conservative Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, a document that calls for replacing thousands of nonpartisan federal employees with political appointees loyal to Trump while introducing conservative Christian values into government and eliminating the Department of Education and the Head Start program for children living in poverty. Streisand called it a “naked grab for power… a blueprint for a dictatorship” and said the 900-page document was full of things that should alarm anyone who values the Constitution.

Trump claimed he had “nothing to do” with the controversial Project 2025, although Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, WashingtonPost Also worth mentioning here is the information that he personally informed the former president about it. There are also recent hidden camera recordings in which one of the co-authors of the document speaks in detail about his work behind the scenes to prepare policies for a possible second Trump administration.

Streisand condemned the use of “fear and hate” to turn people against each other, and described great presidents like Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson who worked to bring Americans together and change the world. “That’s how we make progress, not with hateful, divisive leadership,” she said, praising Harris’ compassion “for all people” while criticizing Trump for his lack of “intelligence, judgment and heart.”

“Our society will thrive with a smart, experienced woman,” Streisand said at the end of her two-minute endorsement speech, “who will defend our rights and send Trump back where he belongs… in his golf cart, lying about his record.”
