Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava may have let the world in on a not-so-hidden secret when she presented Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo and other local Olympians with the key to the city on Wednesday.
Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson was also in attendance, prompting the mayor to remark, “She won gold in women’s basketball. I guess that has something to do with Bam and the Heat, right? That they’re here today?”
Wilson and Adebayo, among others, reacted to the situation on social media:
Both Wilson and Adebayo helped lead the United States to gold in women’s and men’s basketball.
Wilson was particularly dominant and averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game, while Adebayo played more of a supporting role for the Americans, recording 6.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
As for the comments made during Wednesday’s presentation, the mayor must have heard some of the rumors circulating.
“Fans have been convinced for months that A’ja and Bam are a couple,” said Meghan L. Hall of USA Today wrote. “The two basketball players were spotted together in Las Vegas earlier this year and the rumor mill was swirling. Things got even louder during the Olympics when fans learned of a subtle aja-bam handshake after the U.S. women’s team won gold.”
The fact that Wilson was present when Adebayo was handed the key to the city will not calm these rumors.
Adebayo was not the only Olympian honored at the ceremony. Synchronized swimmer Daniella Ramirez, sprinter Twanisha Terry, water polo goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson, sailor Sarah Newberry Moore and judoka Angelica Delgado were also honored.
