Bail: Telangana Deputy SP Rao gets bail after 5 months in phone tapping case | Hyderabad News

Wiretapping: Addl SP Rao released on bail after 5 months

Hyderabad: Almost five months after his arrest in the phone tapping case – along with three other senior police officers from Telangana – N Bhujanga Rao, another SP-rank officer, has been sentenced to 15 days provisional deposit for medical reasons. The arrested intelligence officer referred to his medical history, which involved a heart procedure he had undergone, and claimed that further treatment was required.
Rao has been in custody since March 23. He is accused of being part of a team of police officials who allegedly conspired to tap the phones of political bigwigs, including current Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and his family, leading industrialists and private citizens, to help BRS stay in power in Telangana.
In the alleged phone tapping case, the police have named six persons as accused – former Special Intelligence Bureau chief Prabhakar Rao, DSP officer Praneeth Rao, ASP Bhujanga Rao and Tirupathanna and a senior executive of a local media company Sravan Kumar. Except for the absconding Prabhakar Rao and Sravamar, the rest have been arrested and are in judicial custody for nearly five months. Their Deposit Petitions were repeatedly rejected by the House of Commons authorities Court in the past. While granting bail to Rao, the First Additional Sessions Judge imposed several conditions, including directing the accused not to leave the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) premises.
“This Court considers that, given the complexity of the Medical conditions of the accused may require a thorough diagnosis which may even include his hospitalisation. In view of the medical condition of the accused, this Court is of the view that the application of the accused for grant of interim bail on medical and humanitarian grounds is required to be considered,” the Court said in its order.
Though the prosecution agreed to provide an escort for a day or two, the court said that this would be an unnecessary financial burden on the state. Hence, the court granted him interim bail without police escort. After the 15 days, Rao will have to inform the court about his treatment and transfer.
