Bagnaia regains the lead after Austrian MotoGP triumph

Two-time MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia won the Austrian Grand Prix to complete his one-two finish at the weekend and move five points clear at the top of the World Championship.

The Italian Ducati rider, who secured second place on the grid after dominating practice and winning the sprint race on Saturday, overtook his title rival Jorge Martin on the second lap and saw the chequered flag.

Australian Jack Miller, who had scored points in Saturday’s sprint, crashed on lap 11 while in sixth place, but was able to get back on his KTM and secure 19th place.

After breaking the lap record and securing pole position at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Saturday, Martin finished second, with Enea Bastianini third to complete the all-Ducati podium.

“The pace was incredible. I think Jorge and I did something incredible in terms of speed and consistency,” Bagnaia said.

“I just tried to be a little bit better than him every lap to open up a gap because I knew that anything could happen with the rear tire here in the final laps.

“But I am very happy… I want to thank my entire team and the academy for the work they do every day. This is a special day for us.”

Once Bagnaia had a clear run, he was unstoppable as Martin struggled to keep up with his pace.

Bagnaia crossed the finish line with a large lead over the chasing field and won his third Austrian Grand Prix in a row.

Six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, who was third fastest in qualifying, made up several places to finish fourth after making a poor start by going too wide on the first lap.

The 31-year-old also crashed in the sprint and is now in fourth place in the championship standings.
